01 — The argument

Yield is a conservation instrument.

When a hectare underperforms, the cheapest way to grow a harvest is to farm another hectare. That is the mechanism behind most cropland expansion into forest — not malice, arithmetic.

Correcting the limiting nutrient reverses the arithmetic. A farm that lifts output on the land it already holds has no commercial reason to clear more, and a written prescription makes that gain repeatable rather than lucky.

Prescribing to the deficit cuts over-application, which cuts run-off into watercourses and the emissions embedded in wasted product.

Acidity correction first

Below pH 5.5 a third of applied nitrogen never reaches the crop. Liming before dosing means less fertilizer does more work.

Local integration

Ugandan-made stock sourced alongside imports shortens the freight leg and supports domestic manufacturing capacity.

Two training days per cooperative season. A prescription only reduces waste if the people spreading it know the calendar.
